Don’t go run out and sign-up with the first company offering to build you a WordPress website + blog. There are many things to take into account before you bite the bullet.

Make Sure You Own the Site

First, you want to build a WordPress website that is YOURS, that sits on a server that you control. One lady was so impressed with her Real Estate WordPress website that she got for just $59 per month. She came to me to make some changes. Unfortunately, she didn’t own the site, and we couldn’t get into the place to make the functional changes she wanted to make because the site wasn’t hers.

This is a problem because one of the main reasons for doing a WordPress site is to build “web turf” or “web real estate” to expand your footprint. It is wasteful to blog and build a site that belongs to someone else or sits on a server that you do not control. All your content building work builds equity and makes the site more valuable. If you don’t own the site–all that equity belongs to the landlord, or the person who has ftp power to control the site. Make sure you own the site before you get started.
