Backwards Linking for SEO
So far, you should understand the following:
The Importance of Linking
Different ways to build links
Google PR ranking determination
Now, it's time to learn about "inbound links" or "backlinks." Backlinks occur when another website links to yours. The more backlinks you have coming into your website the better.
Backward Links
A Backward Link is what Google calls the incoming links to your website. In other words, when another website links to your site for any reason, you have a backward link. To find out the backward links on any website, click the encircled "i" next to the Google PageRank located on top of your browser with the Google Toolbar installed.
Checking Your Competitor's Back Links
Competing with another firm for a top spot in Google or Yahoo? Just think--with this nifty feature, you can see who's linking to your competition! Do a backward link check on the bad boys to see what's up. If you're site is just as good--or better--than your competitor, it is likely due to better inbound links.
Competitive Reciprocal Linking
The cool part is that once you know who's linking to your formidable foe, you can gather those links yourself. Take some time to find out who is linking to your competitor. Then, contact those websites that seem appropriate and request a link exchange with them. Chances are good that they'll oblige. Obviously they link with your industry, since they're linking to your competition.
Checking backward links tells you exactly where you stand in the SEO war and is especially good for later in the game when you're on the first or second page of search results and want to beat out a company ahead of yours.
Watch Your Back
Likewise, the competition can view links pointed to your site too. The key is to set in place a consistent linking strategy and obtaining new links different ways on a monthly basis. May the best website win!
